2017 TOAD'S FRANCE/SPAIN TOUR

COSTS

The fees are based on an exchange rate of £1 = 1.15€  and at the time of paying the balance of fees a surcharge may be made or refund given depending on the value of sterling at the time of receiving the balance.

COST PER PERSON, BASED ON TWO PEOPLE PER CAR, SHARING A DOUBLE OR TWIN ROOM

TOUR SUMMARY

An 11 day tour starting with an overnight ferry crossing from Portsmouth to St.Malo. Our first day's route takes us in the morning to Loheac, just south of Rennes, where we visit the Classic Car Museum. We then continue down to La Baule on the Atlantic coast where our hotel is located.On the second day we continue down the west coast of France to La Rochelle where we cross the bridge to Ile de Re where our hotel is located in the charming port of St. Martin de Re. The following day we continue south to St. Jean de Luz, near Biarritz, where our next hotel is located.On our 4th day we leave the coast and drive east across the north Pyrenees to Tarbes then we head into the Pyrenees across the Spanish border to Vielha where our hotel is a Pararor overlooking the valley. The next day we drive a scenic mountain route to La Seu D'Urgell just a few miles south of Andorra where our hotel is located.The following day we drive an extremely scenic route east through the mountains to Vic Sau where our second Parador hotel is located overlooking a lake.On the 7th day we continue east to the Meditterrenean coast and then drive up the stunning Costa Brava coast to our hotel. On day 8 we drive north up the scenic Costa Brava Mediterranean coast to Carcassonne where our chateau hotel is located in a village 5 miles away. The following day we drive north to the Dordogne where our hotel is the Moulin du Roc just outside Brantome.On day 10 we drive up through the Loire Valley to La Chartre sur Le Loir where we spend the last night of the tour. On our final day we drive up to Cherbourg where we catch the 5.00pm ferry to Portsmouth which arrives at 19.45

Draft itinerary

Thursday August 31st, Ferry from Portsmouth to St. Malo leaves Portsmouth at 20.15 ( alternatively participants can join the tour in St Malo tomorrow)

Day 1 Friday, September 1st     St. Malo to La Baule via Dinan and Loheac ( 130 miles )  ( Roscoff to La Baule via Loheac 213 miles )

Our ferry arrives in St Malo at 8.30am ( Participants on the ferry from Ireland arrive in Roscoff at 10.30am  and drive direct to Loheac )

We drive 30 miles down to Dinan our morning coffee stop, see photos below.

After coffee we continue south for another 60 miles to our lunch stop, Loheac, just south of Rennes.

After lunch we are joined by participants travelling on the ferry from Rosslare in Ireland to Roscoff and visit the impressive classic car museum in Loheac, Le Manoir de l’Automobile et des Vieux Métiers,

After our visit we drive 60 miles south to La Baule where our hotel is located overlooking the sea.

Day 2 Saturday, September 2nd        La Baule to Ile de Re near La Rochelle ( 130 miles )

Our route takes us south down the west coast of France to La Rochelle where we cross the bridge onto the Ile de Re where our hotel is located in St.Martin de Re a charming port on the east coast of the island.

Day 3 Sunday, September 3rd   Ile de Re to Saint Jean de Luz ( 245 miles including 230 miles on motorways)

Our morning route takes us 130 miles down to St Emilion our lunch stop.

After lunch we continue south down to St.Jean de Luz near Biarritz where our hotel is located.

Day 4 Monday, September 4th  St Jean de Luz to Vielha, Spain ( 175 miles )

We leave the coast and take the drive east via Pau to Tarbes where we leave the motorway and drive into the Pyrenees to Bagneres de Bigorre.

Then a scenic mountain route takes us over the Col d'Aspin and Col de Peyresourde.

 From here we continue on via Bagneres de Louchon to Vielha where our Parador hotel awaits us, see photo below.

Day 5 Tuesday, September 5th  Vielha to La Seu d'Urgell ( 130 miles )

Leaving Vielha we drive though Arties before we climb the Port de la Bonaijua see photo below.

We then descend the drive down the Valley de la Noguera to Tremp our morning coffee stop.

We then climb the Coll de Faidella, the Coll de Boixols and the Coll de Nargo. See photos below.

From here we head north to La Seu d' Urgell where our stylish hotel for the night overlooks the town, see photos below:

Day 6 - Wednesday, September 6th La Seu D'Urgell to Tavernoles, Vic Sau ( 120  miles )

We drive south for a few miles towards Coll de Nargo before turning onto a minor scenic road which passes through a gorge where we stop for morning coffee at Cambrils, see photos below:

After coffee we continue on our scenic route and climb up the Coll de Jou to Berga, see photos below.

Our lunch stop is the charming village of Alpens where the local cafe/restaurant houses the local theatre, see photos below:

We then head south and then turn off onto the main road towards Vic Sau then on to a minor road which leads us to Tavernoles on Lake de Sau where our Parador hotel overlooks the lake, see photo below.

In the afternoon you can visit on foot the nearby monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres on a peninsula surrounded by a lake, see photos below:

Day 7 - Thursday September 7th Vic Sau to Platja de Pals, Costa Brava (95 miles)

We leave Tavernoles and drive south-east towards Vic where we join the C25 south-east to Sant Sadurni d'Osormort and then over the Col de Revell. We then drive to Arlucies where we turn north to Angles. From here we drive to Bescano just south of Girona. We then continue east to Sant Sadurn de l'Heura and La Bisbol. Here we take a scenic back road to the Cap de Begur and to Platja de Pals, where our hotel is located.

Day 8 Friday September 8th Platja de Pals to Carcassonne ( 140 miles)

Our route takes us north along the coast to Figueres, Roses and  Cadaques our morning coffee stop.

We then proceed up the coast to Collioure our lunch stop

We then continue up to Perpignan where we turn away from the coast to St.Paul de Fennouillet where we drive through the Gorge de Golamus  to Limoux and north to Carcassonne where our hotel is located in a village lees than 10 miles to the east of the walled town.

Day 9 Saturday September 9th Carcassonne to Brantome ( 240 miles)

Our route takes you north-west to Auch and then north to Agen then up via Villeneuve sur Lot to Bergerac and then to Brantome where our hotel, Le Moulin du Roc, is located 5 miles away.

Day 10 Sunday September 10th Brantome to  La Chartre sur Le Loir ( 200 miles)

Our route takes you north via Confolens and the Vienne valley to Angles sur L'Anglin our lunch stop.

We then drive up to Le Chartre sur le Loir where our hotel is located, the Hotel de France.

The hotel is famous in motor racing circles as it was the base for several Le Mans 24 hours racing teams in the 1950s

Day 11 Monday September 11th La Chartre sur Le Loir to Cherbourg ( 215 miles)

We leave our hotel and take the motorway to Le Mans and then west to Vitre our lunch stop.

We then drive north-west to Le Mont St. Michel our afternoon coffee stop.

We then continue up to Cherbourg to catch the 5.00pm ferry to Portsmouth which arrives at 19.00.
